Roots rock, crafty songwriting and catchy tunes ... the four-piece band Harvest is popping up all over the local scene. They dub themselves "roots pop," which basically translates into jangly guitars, soulful crooning, and an undeniable melody infused throughout their whole sound.

Their debut CD showcases their typical polished, tight playing and honest, insightful lyrics. You can hear their influences straining through the notes: Funkadelic, good ol' rawk 'n' roll, even folk, without overpowering their own distinct sound. Lead singer Rocco's vocals range from a soft, smooth crooning to a rougher-hewn, harder sound. It's his range that's most captivating, and his ability to convey emotion through his voice.

Not to imply that Harvest can't be light and fun too. It's likely their catchier numbers that will garner the most attention. John Dell, who's also responsible for stellar backing vocals, has a bluesy edge to his guitar playing, giving Harvest their unique sound. Bass player Bridges, coming from a jazz background, is a master of knowing when to showcase his talents and when to let other musicans take the lead. Drummer Kevin is a master of rhythm and groove, truly backbone of the band, and brings up the back with driving beats.
